Where is the question from? There is a grammatical error within the fixed portion:

The increased popularity and availability of televisions has....

Subject-Verb disagreement - has should be have

To answer your question, E is incorrect because of what follows the underlined part. We must use "perpetuated" because that word is followed by "by"

D) language variations...perpetuated by isolation.

E) language variations...perpetuating by isolation.

It's idiomatically incorrect to follow "perpetuating" with "by". The correct construct would have been "language variations...perpetuating isolation."

Where did you learn about the idiomatic use of "perpetuate", if I may ask? This idiom is not discussed in MGMAT SC.

I picked "C" at first.

I think Manhattan GMAT and OG do the trick. Key is to read them inside out, multiple times. Still not there but definitely the only source.

C is incorrect becasue the underlined version is modying the beginnig of the sentence. You can not use "which" cos it is a relative pronoun and refers to the word preceding it. You need to modify the entire phrase for which an "ing" construction is the viable option.

Thanks. I'm plodding through MGMAT SC right now. Very tedious and painful work. I fear I'll have to read it several times before everything sinks in.
