The high costs to taxpayers were mostly a result of policies that guarantee cotton farmers a portion of their projected revenue, rather than of coverage paying them for damaged crops.

A)rather than of coverage paying them for damaged crops

B)instead of their coverage that pays for damaged crops

C)as opposed to coverage paying them for damaged crops

D)rather than coverage that pays them for damaged crops

E)instead of coverage that pays them for damaged crop

OAD

Please explain me why option B is eliminated ,because of " instead of" or "their" .

Hey J,

This one comes down to Parallelism.

The high costs were mostly a result of POLICIES...rather than COVERAGE.

"result of X rather than Y"

"Rather than" is a common GMAT idiom, so while I prefer it, there's nothing inherently wrong with "instead of." It's just that "their" breaks the parallelism:

CORRECT: The high costs were mostly a result of POLICIES...instead of COVERAGE.

See how "their" breaks the paralleism? Never underestimate how much the GMAT loves parallelism when making a comparison! :)

X instead of Y means X IN PLACE OF Y.
Conveyed meaning:
Y was REPLACED by X.
In the SC above, coverage was not REPLACED by policies.
Thus, the use of instead of does not convey the intended meaning.
