an increase in synthetic fertilizers use can create serious environmental problems

an increase in parts can create serious environmental problems

Which one would you choose ?

How about this:

The eagles huge wings, and they can fly high!

Is it a correct sentence ? What does they refer to ?

No

Essential info is made as a subordinate clause, usage of "if" construction and wordy.

I wouldnt choose C

Also, respond in case you feel that I you feel otherwise

If we have to choose /assume the antecedent..then how is the sentence gramatically clear and correct:)
How about this:

The eagles huge wings, and they can fly high!

Is it a correct sentence ? What does they refer to ?
If we look at the sentence logically ,then definately we got to choose "eagles"

i.e "they" refer to eagles.

But in the process of doing that dont you think we are not doing what we intend to do..

a sentence should have a direct and clear antecedent..

"they" can also refer to "wings"..If we keep logic out of it..

pls lemme know where am i going wrong..

thanks

Well I have the same doubts. So should a pronoun refer to the close noun ? ( wings ) OR should be the subject of the preceding clause ( eagle )

Lets find out!

this sentence is incorrect because the first independent clause doesnt have a verb

correct : The eagles have huge wings, and they can fly high!

Two independent clauses joined by a cordinating conjunction.

If a pronoun is used to introduce a subordinate or independent clause, that pronoun always refers to the subject of the preceding clause.

They - here it clearly refers to eagles not wings.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you still have any doubts.

I think OA is perfect, and it should be A.

I eliminated C for the same reason as iamcste did.

Diesel engines burn as much as 30% less fuel than gasoline engines of comparable size, as well as emitting far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer of the other gasses that have been implicated in global warming.
A of comparable size , as well as emitting far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer of the other gasses that have
B of comparable size, as well as emit far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer of the other gasses having
C of comparable size, and also they emit far fewer carbon dioxide and other gasses that have
D that have a comparable size, and also they emit far fewer of the other gasses having
E that have a comparable size, as well as emitting far fewer of the other gasses having

So according to what have discussed above...What does THEY refer to in option C ?

Is there any ambiguity ?

There is no ambiguity is option C. They- refers to Diesel engines clearly.

C - far fewer - wrong

gases cant be countable - hence less should be used

the second part in option A - where few is used - it is comparing global warming gases - which can be counted, therefore, few is the correct construction.

Another error in option C is usage of comma + and - signifying independent clause structure, which is not required. We need subordinate clause.

Hope this helps. Let me knows if you have any doubts.
