Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

Sulfur dioxide, a major contributor to acid rain, is an especially serious pollutant
because it diminishes the respiratory system's ability to deal with all other pollutants.
A. an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the respiratory system's ability
to deal
B. an especially serious pollutant because of diminishing the respiratory system's
capability of dealing
C. an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the capability of the respiratory
system in dealing
D. a specially serious pollutant because it diminishes the capability of the respiratory
system to deal
E. a specially serious pollutant because of diminishing the respiratory system's ability to
deal


Please help.

"specially" is the wrong word diction-wise, so D and E are out. The author is using "especially" for emphasis here.

A is the most concise sentence out of A, B, and C.

"it diminishes" with a clear pronoun and present-tense verb will always be preferable to "of diminishing", a prepositional phrase awkwardly placed after "because."

C is wordy with "the capability of" and "in dealing." It's just not needed.

Hi Vivian,

it diminishes the respiratory system's ability to deal with all other pollutants - is an independent clause. Shouldn't it be connected properly with the restof the sentence by a COMMA + because

COMMA is helpful in separating the independent clause form dependent clause.

But in this example you know dependent clause starts with because so you don't need comma.

Where as, if sentence starts with because ex: because......, it diminishes ...; you need a comma separating dependent clause from main clause to avoid figuring out where the main clause starts.
