An unusually strong cyclist can, it is hoped, provide enough power to set a new distance record for human-powered aircraft in MIT's diaphanous construction of graphite fiber and plastic.

(A) can, it is hoped, provide enough power to set
(B) it is hoped, can provide enough power that will set
(C) hopefully can provide enough power, this will set
(D) is hopeful to set
(E) hopes setting

Correct
(B) it is hoped, can provide enough power that will set
(C) hopefully can provide enough power, this will set
Awkward and wordy construction
(D) is hopeful to set
Who is hopeful? Cyclist? it seems change of meaning.
(E) hopes setting
Same as D. Original sentence says that it is a general hope that a strong cyclist can power a aircraft, not that the cyclist is hoping something.

B - sentence fragment (what is the subject of "can provide..."? Is it cyclist or An unusually strong cyclist it is hoped? If it is the 2nd one, then use of comma NOT clear
C - 2 idenpendent clause joined using comma (An...powoer; This will...)
D/E - changes the tense to simple present as if it were a case of habit/fact. This changes the meaning of the sentence. In original sentence emphasis is on 'can provide ==> possibility. The use of is/hopes makes it more certain.

IMO A

IMO: D
there is 'recorord for human powered aircraft' in the sentence, no need to have 'enough power' in underlined portion of sentence... so the choice D can convey the exact meaning of the sentence

D is not the correct answer. Look at the meaning what D conveys. It says that the cyclist is hopeful to...., but it's actually that any scientists or physicists are hoping the same..So, D changes the intent of the sentence.

i'll go for A

A) IT IS HOPED is needed to modify the preceding clause to convey the correct meaning. The author is hoping that the cyclist can...
B)misplaced IT IS HOPED
C) Run on sentence
D) changes the meaning of the sentence. HOPE shifts from author to cyclist
E)changes meaning. setting is a gerund
