In the early 1970's, when art reached its current high levels of popularity and value, a rash of thefts of works by great artists occurred in major art museums around the world. But, after 1975, sophisticated new security systems were installed in every major museum. As a consequence, important thefts in major museum declined markedly.

Which of the following, if true, is strongest if offered as part of evidence to show that improved security systems were responsible for the decline in thefts of important works from major museums?

A) The typical art work stolen during both the 1970's and 1980's was a small piece of that could be concealed on a person of the thief.
B) Premiums paid by major museums to insure their most important works of art increased considerably between 1975 and 1985.
C) The prices paid to art thieves for stolen works were lower during the 1980's than the prices paid to art thieves for comparable works during the 1970's.
D) Thefts from private collections and smaller galleries of works by great artists increased sharply starting in the late 1970's.
E) Art thefts in Europe, which has the largest number of works by great artists, outnumbered art thefts in United States during the 1980's.

I'd go with A because it removes one other possibility.

The other choices either weaken or are irrelevant.

which option is it killing?

i will also go with D as theft in other gallary(small nd private means likely not having the security systems...)...it cancels on one possibility is not because of reduction in general in all kind of thefts...

"A" pretty much tells us that art size is not a reason because it remained the same.

On a second thought, "D" seems way stronger!

It is sad to see two options strengthening :(

I don't think this is from the official guide. What is the source of this question mate?

Ppl I don't like ANY of the answers :) none of them sound logical to me...

D too seems weird, if the thefts from private collection increased, how does this prove that the security at major museums was effective? how can we assume that security systems were not also installed by the owners of private collections... I don't like this answer, there is no real link.

A - also not logical, OK the size was the same... so what? can we say that 'if the size of things stolen was the same then most probably the security was effective?' I guess no...

Other answers actually weaken the effectiveness of security.

To me this question sounds very wrong.Would be great to know source and OA ....

IMO D.

Question tells that major museum has security system and so there was increase in the thefts in private galleries. This reinforces the conclusion

How does this eliminate alternate possibility? What are the other possibilities that are eliminated due to this choice?

A is eliminated becuase the period is from 1970 to 1980 but security system were installed in 1975. Also Size is irrelevant.

OA is D, source is one of the paper tests that i have (Sadly, i don't know whether these tests are official or not, but having good questions, but again, with no explanations  )
I don't know why i chose C at first place :x , pretty illogical. D seems better than others on second thoughts.

It does strengthen, yes. It is one of the rules in PowerScore CR Bible.

Removing a weakening possibility = Strengthening

The argument says X caused Y. If one of the choices say "Z didn't cause Y", then this choice is strengthening the argument. And this rule fits A perfectly.

This is why it is usually preferred to study the Verbal part only from the official guide.

I think D is the best in this case
