Strategy for AWA?

Gurus

I am not a good writer and have never written impromptu essays in my life? can you please suggest some strategy to improve AWA skills?

Hey Piyush

Well you can approach the essays in the following way:-

Brainstroming - 5 Mins.

Writing - 20 mins.

Formatting - 5 Mins.

Also you can read the essays posted by fellow members so as to understand how to put your ideas into sentences.

Definitely have a look at some of the essays on the forum; they can provide excellent examples of what to do.

The biggest secret for AWA is that you can have half your essay written before you even walk in the door. Each essay requires pretty much the same format and structure, no matter what the topic. Create an "essay template" for yourself, memorize it, and practice applying it on new topics a few times, and you should be good to go!

Also remember that AWA doesn't factor into your "real" score, and most schools only care that you receive a respectable AWA score. For example, a 6.0 isn't really viewed any more favorably than a 4.0 (but of course, you should do as well as you can).

Piyush,

I would strongly recommend ARCO "GMAT CAT Answers to the Real Essay Questions." I am cent percent sure that you will not be disappointed and you don't need to refer to anything else. The book provides nice strategy, and covers most of the essay topics possible in GMAT. If you are in India then you can easily get the book in Crosswords or The Landmark.
