Average x Number = Sum
Old Total 800 x n = 800n
This Sale 2000 x 1 =2000
New Total 900 x n +1 = 900(n +1)
The right-hand column gives the equation you need: 8 0 0 n + 2 0 0 0 = 9 0 0 (n + 1)
8 0 0 m + 2 0 0 0 = 9 0 0 n + 9 0 0
1100 = 100n
11 = n
Since you are looking for the new number of sales, which is n + 1, Sam has made a total of 12 sales.[/list]

Step 2: Calculate the distances between the averages.
800---------100--------900--------1100------2000
Step 3: Determine the ratio in the mixture.
The required ratio of $800 sales to $2000 sales is equal to the RECIPROCAL of the distances in red.
($800 sales) : ($2000 sales) = 1100:100 = 11:1.
The resulting ratio implies that there are 11 sales with an average commission of $800 and 1 sale with a commission of $2000, for a total of 12 sales.
The correct answer is D.
An alternate approach is to PLUG IN THE ANSWERS, which represent the total number of sales.

His current average commission is 900.
The change is 100.
So take the 2000 from the current sale. 900 of that 2000 is the average commission.
The other 1100 went to increase the other commissions by 100 each.
So there must have been 11 other commissions.
Total number of sales is 1 + 11 = 12.
