Experts say Senator John Ensign may have violated ethics laws by helping an aide get work after having an affair with his wife.

I'm confused with the use of HIS. Does it refer John or Aide?

Is it a correct statement?

Yes it is correct statement. HIS refers to aide here. Let's put John and Aide to fill up his:
1. Experts say John may have done x after having an affair with aide's wife... Sounds correct, right?
2. Experts say John may have done x after having an affair with John's wife :D :shock: :? :D
Doesn't statement 2 sound funny? A man having affair with his wife and that is also violating ethics law hehehe.
