Starting off with SC! All Ideas Welcome :)

I just took a practice GMAT yesterday (GMATPrep) and didn't do so well on the sentence completion portion (8 wrong). Would anybody have ideas as to where I should start? Particularly, here are my characteristics:

- Verbal: 39
- CR: 1 wrong
- RC: 0 wrong
- SC: 9 wrong
- Overall score (with quant, where I made too many careless errors): 720

I have heard of the Manhattan Sentence Correction book. Is this a good idea when getting started off with SC? Or should I go for something else?

Thanks very much for your input!

Can someone explain what the breakdown of Verbal and Quant means? How do you arrive at "39" in this person's case. Thanks.
