As an after thought, I understood why "like a rise in temperature does" is wrong construction.
So, my answer is D- aside from the fact that it has an additional term.

c. Certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature doessansulee wrote:Hi,
I am confused between C and D.
I have eliminated A and B based on the use of "make", when it should actually be "makes".
E is definitely out as "the reason" and "because" in the same sentence seem redundant.
I some how also think D could be the answer. But the option includes an additional term- "tongue" as against what is mentioned in the underlined part of the original sentence. But, I am not sure that change is allowed on the GMAT.
Can someone explain why "like a rise in temperature does" is wrong?
Look forward to knowing the correct answer.
Thanks!
"Like" should be used for Nouns & Hypothetical; "As" is the correct usage, here

The answer is 'D'
(A) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature
'foods' is plural- so it should be 'make'
'The reason' with 'because' is redundant.
(B) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature
'foods' is plural- so it should be 'make'
(C) Certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature does
'chemical stimulates the same nerves in the mouth' is compared to 'stimulation of nerves by a rise in temperature'-Wrong comparison
(D) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature
Correct in both meaning as well as usage of grammar
(E) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth as does a rise in temperature
'The reason' with 'because' is redundant.

dont understand how D can be the answer here because of this
[/i]the reason that certain spicy foods.... that
either 'that' should not come after the in the first cause or there should be no that in the second clause.
E is a better choice I feel.

"the reason" already meanings "because"
In {D}
(D) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature
Blue & Green part acts separately; Blue part is infact a filler

Thanks.
Here, rise serves as the subject of the verb does.

Quickly eliminate A and B due to subject verb agreement issues.mmslf75 wrote:The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature; this stimulation sometimes results in the activation of certain biological cooling mechanisms, one of which is perspiration.

Eliminate E because "The reason...is because" is a redundant structure--incorrect on the GMAT.
C used "like" in the wrong manner. "Like" is used to compare two nouns; this is not the case here.
This process of elimination leaves us D. As a last check, there were no errors in this choice either.

OA is D
Its mentioned in MGMAT forum that Pronoun ambiguity is tolerable to some extent on GMAT
Why A is rejected here ?
Subject-Verb agreement problem
Are we looking at multiple errors for rejecting A...
MGMAT explanation says
the pronoun "they" has an ambiguous referent: it could refer either to "foods" or "people." and 2 other errors
Query is : If were to have only this pronoun error then would A be the right choice??

Incorrect#1:
The reason that certain spicy foods makes some people sweat...
Subject Verb Issue.
Correct: The reason that certain spicy foods make some people sweat...
Incorrect#2:
...makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical...
Pronoun and Antecedent Issue:
It seems 'they' is referring to people
As a thumb rule: Whenever you find the answer choice switching between a pronoun and an actual noun,
always choose the answer that omits the pronoun in the answer choice and uses the noun(antecedent) instead.
Option D correctly uses 'these foods' instead of 'they'
Does that make sense?
