I think it is 'C'
D introduces additional information 'Tongue' while that is not the intent of the author i guess.
Let me know the correct answer if i am wrong.

my answer is D. I arrived at my answer based on the S-V agreement rule and any answer choice that uses
"the reason that...because"
That rules out A & E. Also the use of "like" in answer choices B & C is wrong. "as" should be used.

As option D contains extra info..it should be ruled out.
A & B do not have subject verb agreement.(makes)
C has wrong usage for 'LIKE'

So answer is E.

As rightly said by everyone, A and B can be rejected right away because of subject verb agreement.

Option C: can be ruled out immediately for the two errors:
1. "THEY CONTAIN..." ask question who...we have two answers People or Spicy foods
2. Wrong comparison "stimulates the same nerves in the mouth" like "a rise in temperature does"

this leaves us with two options

d. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature
