Hi All,

I think it is 'C'
D introduces additional information 'Tongue' while that is not the intent of the author i guess.
Let me know the correct answer if i am wrong.

Thanks,
Kalmesh

The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature; this stimulation sometimes results in the activation of certain biological cooling mechanisms, one of which is perspiration.

a. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature

b. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature

c. Certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature does

d. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature

e. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth as does a rise in temperature

Hence the correct answer is D

my answer is D. I arrived at my answer based on the S-V agreement rule and any answer choice that uses
"the reason that...because"
That rules out A & E. Also the use of "like" in answer choices B & C is wrong. "as" should be used.

As option D contains extra info..it should be ruled out.
A & B do not have subject verb agreement.(makes)
C has wrong usage for 'LIKE'

So answer is E.

OA : D

a. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature - They ambiguous, spicy foods - plural - so make should be used rather than makes.

b. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature

c. Certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature does - like should be used only while comparing nouns moreover they is ambiguous

d. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature - CORRECT

e. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth as does a rise in temperature - They is ambiguous

Hi All,

As rightly said by everyone, A and B can be rejected right away because of subject verb agreement.

Option C: can be ruled out immediately for the two errors:
1. "THEY CONTAIN..." ask question who...we have two answers People or Spicy foods
2. Wrong comparison "stimulates the same nerves in the mouth" like "a rise in temperature does"

this leaves us with two options

d. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature
>> Error - "ON THE TONGUE" additional word included. But in 'E' we have an error where "THEY CONTAIN..." is not clarified.
Hence I went for option D, since the grammatically it is correct though an additional phrase "and on the tongue" is added

e. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth as does a rise in temperature
>> "THEY CONTAIN" - Pronoun must agree with antecedent noun. Which is the noun here?

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Pritish

Could there be a more organised way of answering these daily questions? As in can a gmat instructor post a final answer instead of discussing and answering individual posts because to find out what the answer is, we have to go through all the posts and still the answer remains undecided. Please keep a different link wherein u will just display the answer and a different link wherein people will debate over it and get their querries cleared. Please stop this blind helping blind sort thing.

Use of both "the reason" and "because" is redundant
b.The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature
usage of like is incorrect, like should be used for comparing nouns or pronouns
c. Certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature does
same as "b"
d. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature

correct because the subject agrees with verb, no redundancy and comparision is correct

e. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth as does a rise in temperature

same mistake as in "a"

I will go for E.

A,B-> Subject Verb agreement issue.

C-> it uses ... LIKE..rise in temperature does. We should be looking for "as".

D-> talks about in mouth and tongue. Additional info!

E-> seems redundant, but best option out of all these!

Right answer is D.

A) S-V Agreement, Pronoun ambiguity

B) S-V Agreement

C) "Like a rise in temp" - wrong construction

D) Uses 'these foods' instead of 'they'. Plus S-V agreement - plural 'make' is used instead of singular 'makes'.

E) Noun ambiguity.
