IMO its D.

A."because they contain a chemical" is confusing as whether it is people or spices.
B. "same nerves " should be followed by "as"
C. "same nerves " should be followed by "as"
D. Correct.
E. Same as A.

My answer: D

A and B can be eliminated because of makes when there should be make
C can be eliminated because, the comparision is about action - simulation, "as" is a correct choice than "like" when comparing two actions.
E the reason and because is redundant.. Reason is that is a better idiom. Hence D.

The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature; this stimulation sometimes results in the activation of certain biological cooling mechanisms, one of which is perspiration.

a. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature

b. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature

c. Certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature does

d. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature

e. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth as does a rise in temperature

This whole sentence is based on 4 parameters.

1. Subject - Verb Agreement
2. Pronoun Ambiguity
3. As - Like Difference
4. Redundancy - The reason and because being used in the same sentence.

Based on these 4 parameters, the best answer choice is D.

Hope this helps.

IMO: D
A:"foods" doesn't fit with "makes", "reason" is "because" doesn't make sense.
B:"foods" doesn't fit with "makes", "like" doesn't work here
C:"they" as in "they contain a..." is ambiguous. it can refer to either "foods" or "people".
D:Correct
E:"reason" is "because" doesn't make sense.

(D) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature.

Hence IMO D is correct option, since S-V agreement
The reason...because redudancy is not there
and in the mouth nad on the tongue can conisdered as a single unit.

All of the answers are refering "they" and this can be refered to food or pepper.leave us with 2 options b and d, b option does fails keeping like instead of as, so D is teh right choice

This sentence tests the subject verb agreement (Numbers) and pronoun ambiguity. (D) clears all the mistakes.

I am just confused. Will the Pros answer this q?

Is it really ok to bring in a new information if the answer is grammatically correct?

Cause the first time i saw the tongue, i rejected d straight away and only thing that seemed ok to me of the rest was E.

The correct answer should be D

The choice A can be ruled out on the basis of redundancy, usage of reason & because.
The choice B can be ruled out on the basis of the usage of like, "like a rise in temperature"
The choice C can be ruled out on the basis of the ambiguity by the usage of they (People / Spicy foods)
The choice E can be ruled out on the basis of redundancy, usage of reason & because.

The choice D seems to be the best choice.

My question to the Experts: Choice D adds new objects in the sentence, "in the mouth and on the tongue" is this acceptable ?

Whats the actual answer ???? Can the person who posted the question reply...

I agree D looks correct... it does add tongue to the original sentence... but contextually it makes sense right ???
