Just a question with the "as does a rise in temperature"

It just sounds weird to me, does anyone have any other examples of when this type of phrase is used correctly?

I think the answer id D.

My Reason:

A: "The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes" -- inconsistent
B: same as A
C: "because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature does " -- defies parallelism
D: seems most appropriate, has "make inconsistent" and the construct of part - "contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature " is in line with parallelism
E: The reason that... is because... --- is not right. Don't know what we'll call it... wrong idiom I suppose?

So, the answer should be D.

I am with E.

D) cannot be right as "in the mouth and on the tongue" seems redundant.

D is not correct as it modifies the sentence in the mouth doesn't mean "ON the tongue".

"Makes" eliminates A AND B

I am confus b/w C and E

The Reason and because sounds redundant to me in E so I pick C

(A) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature --->
Here the main subject verb is reason-is , Subject verb agreement error in the underlined portion. Also "reason and because" must not be together(redundancy comes last).

(B) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature --->
Subject verb agreement error in the underlined portion. Also "reason and because" must not be together(redundancy comes last).
(C) Certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature does --->
LIKE must always modify noun or noun phrases and must never be followed by a verb.
(D) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature --->CORRECT

(E) The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth as does a rise in temperature --->
STOP SIGN here "reason and because" must not be together. Pronoun "they" is ambigous.

Dear Ron

Can the argument, because and reason are redundant, also be used to eliminate some of the options?

Please help.

Thanks.

Check out two things:
a)certain spicy foods make people sweat..(correct)
b)The reason.........is that these

So 'D' is the answer

(E) is correct.
(A) "spicy foods" and "make" make a mismatch of numbers
(B) same as above
(C) "like a rise in temp" the sentence is supposed to assert the reason not compare it with the phenomenon of sweating
(D) tongue is not mentioned in the original sentence
(E) correct

No Confusion that(D) is the best choice

The reason and because are redundant

IMO D is correct. I agree with all the other explanations above, such as S-V agreements.

What I also saw as an error was the redundancy construction; "The reason is that ___ because ...." To make the sentence more concise and brief, you can make this sentence into "the reason that A is that B ". This construction is used in answer D. (whereas A & E use the redundancy expression.)
