If the equilateral triangle formed were on the plane (i.e. a flat triangle), then A would be the answer. However, the triangle here encloses a portion of the surface area of a sphere. Since there is a bulge in the area, the area will be a little more than the area of a flat equilateral triangle.

That said, I think this question is out of scope. I've certainly never seen a an official GMAT question related to the surface area of a sphere before.

Thanx Brent. I get it now. The curved surface in the middle of the triangle will increase the area.
