A quits before the project is completed

A can complete a project in 20 days and B can complete the same project in 30 days. If A and B start working on the project together and A quits 10 days before the project is completed, in how many days will the project be completed?

A. 18 days
B. 27 days
C. 26.67 days
D. 16 days
E. 12 days

Ra=1/20, Rb=1/30

(Ra+Rb)*(t-10)+Rb*10=1 =>

(1/20+1/30)*(t-10)+1/30*10=1

We can solve the equation for t.

t=18

n-10 (1/20 + 1/30)+10(1/30) =1

n-10 (50/600) = 2/3

n-10 = (2/3) * 12=8

n=18

together they would take :

1/20+1/30 = 1/12 and that's equivalent to 12 days to do the job
this means that A quited after completing the second day...
so: A did 2/20 =1/10 of the job
B did 2/30 =1/15 of the job on the second day
together they did (1/10)+(1/15) = 1/6 of the job
if B takes 30 days to do 1 job; how much time would he take to do 1-(1/6) of the job?
R: 5/6 * 30= 25 days
so the full time = 25 days of B's work plus 2 days of (B+A)'s work = 27 days
the answer is B


n-10 (1/20 + 1/30)+10(1/30) =1

n-10 (50/600) = 2/3

n-10 = (2/3) * 12=8

n=18

what is wrong with the above logic

1/20+1/30 = 1/12 and that's equivalent to 12 days to do the job
this means that A quited after completing the second day...
so: A did 2/20 =1/10 of the job
B did 2/30 =1/15 of the job on the second day
together they did (1/10)+(1/15) = 1/6 of the job
if B takes 30 days to do 1 job; how much time would he take to do 1-(1/6) of the job?
R: 5/6 * 30= 25 days

I thought that if together they worked for 2 days, 1/6 of the projected was completed, so be would have to do 5/6 of the project?

Plug in job = 60 units.
Rate for A alone = w/t = 60/20 = 3 units per day.
Rate for B alone = w/t = 60/30 = 2 units per day.
Since A quits 10 days before the project is completed, B works alone for 10 days.
Work completed by B alone in 10 days = r*t = 2*10 = 20 units.
Remaining work = 60-40 = 40 units.
These 40 units were completed by A+B working together (before A quit).
Combined rate for A+B working together = 3+2 = 5 units per day.
Time for A+B to complete 40 units = w/r = 40/5 = 8 days.

Total time = time for B alone + time for A+B together = 10+8 = 18 days.

The correct answer is A.

Hey guys I'm arriving at a different answer. Can someone explain this to me.

1/20 +1/30 is 1/12 of the job/each day

So it takes 12 days to complete the job. Thus, 2 days into it, A quits.

1/6 of the job has been done in 2 days and B has 1/30 of the job for the remaining 5/6 of the job. This comes to 25 days+the original 2=27?

What am I computing wrong?

You're assuming that A and B together has completed the job in 12 days and then you are saying A has left after 2 days! That makes your initial assumption (i.e. A and B together has completed the job in 12 days) baseless! And thus A did not left after 2 days.

After how many days A left the work depends upon the total number of days it took to complete the job. Thus it's a reverse calculation problem.

A left 10 days before the project is complete.
Thus for last 10 days only B has done the work => In last 10 days B has done (10/30) = 1/3 of the project.

Thus, A and B together has done 2/3 of the project.
To do 2/3 of the project A and B together took 12*(2/3) = 8 days

Thus the number of days the project took to be completed = Number of days together A and B worked + number of days only B worked = 8 + 10 = 18

The correct answer is A.
