solve for y - confused

by vladmire » Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:47 am
I am getting confused on the y variable being in the numberator and the denomorator.

4/y - 5 = 5/2y

This is what I did

4/y - 5 =5/2y

4/y - 5y/y = 5/2y

4-5y/y = 5/2y

8-10y-5/2y = 3-10y/2y = 3-5y=0

-5y=-3 y=3/5

4/y - 5 = 5/2y

Add 5 to both sides to get:

4/y=5/2y+5

Subtract 5/2y from both sides to get:

4/y-5/2y=5

Get a common denominator:

8/2y-5/2y=5
3/2y=5
3=10y
3/10=y
