The ancient Romans piped hot water through the walls and under the floors so as to warm up the rooms.

A. so as to warm up the rooms
B. and so would be able to warm up the rooms
C. to warm the rooms up
D. so that they could warm up the rooms
E. in order that they would warm up the rooms[/quote]

A, C, and D are correct. One can argue in favor of any one of the choices A, C, and D.

BUT

If this is in the real exam, I will choose D.

What do the experts say?

IMO D.

A is not correct..There is no idiom "So as to"..The correct one is" So X As to be Y".

Option C-To warm up the rooms is correct sentence

To warm the rooms up is the case of split infinitive.

On Gmatland, "so that" is preferable to "so as to"

"that" refers to the noun just before it.Here that refers to floors and walls.

Though this is not a good question to study, 'they' clearly refers to Romans.

'so as to...' is unidiomatic
B. and so would be able to warm up the rooms
wordy sentence to express intent of ancient Romans
C. to warm the rooms up
should be 'to warm up the rooms'
D. so that they could warm up the rooms
they refers to ancient Romans - correct
E. in order that they would warm up the rooms
should be 'in order to..'
