According to a review of 62 studies of patients suffering from severely debilitating depression, a large majority of the patients reported that missing a night's sleep immediately lifted their depression. Yet sleep-deprivation is not used to treat depression even though the conventional treatments, which use drugs and electric shocks, often have serious side effects.

Which of the following if true, best explains the fact that sleep-depression is not used as a treatment for depression?

A)
The dramatic shifts in mood connected with sleep and wakefulness have not been traced to particular changes in brain chemistry

or
B) Depression returns in the full force as soon as the patients sleeps for even a few hours.

OA
B

All other ans choices I could eliminate.

Why is Ans A wrong? is it considered as out of scope?

So it appears that sleep deprivation helps cure depression. So, why don't we use it as a treatment for depression?

A) This says that changes in brain chemistry cannot explain the affect that sleep deprivation has on depression. Is this a good enough reason to not use sleep deprivation as a treatment for depression? Not really. If it works then why not use it as a treatment. There could be a different explanation.

B) This says that the positive affect that sleep deprivation has on depression is only temporary (depression returns as soon as the patient sleeps for a few hours). Since prolonged sleep deprivation is not practical/sustainable, it is not a very useful treatment.

Both because A is out of scope
And also because B explains why sleep-deprivation is not used.
(It lifts depression for a while and thus is temporary useful)
