Unlike that of earlier works on slavery, Blassingame's innovative study relies not on the records of White slave owners but on the records of the salves themselves, especially the 70 or so autobiographies and memoirs that have been preserved.

C. earlier works on slavery, Blassingame in his
D. earlier works on slavery, Blassingame's
E. the earlier works on slavery, Blassingame in his
Important: Sentences beginning with "like" or "unlike" set up a comparison. In these instances, stop at the comma and ask the question that the opening raises.

So, once we read, Unlike that of earlier works on slavery,... we should stop and ask . . .

"What is unlike that of earlier works on slavery?"

If the sentence is properly constructed, the part that immediately follows the comma will answer that question in a logical manner.

Reading on, we get ..."Blassingame's innovative study"
So, Blassingame's innovative study is unlike that of earlier works on slavery?
This doesn't make any sense. It suggest that Blassingame's study is unlike some study of earlier works on slavery.
ELIMINATE A

Answer choice B: Unlike that of earlier works on slavery, Blassingame ...
Here we are comparing Blassingame and that of earlier works
Nonsense: ELIMINATE B

Answer choice C: Unlike earlier works on slavery, Blassingame in his
Here we are comparing Blassingame and earlier works
Nonsense: ELIMINATE C

Answer choice D: Unlike earlier works on slavery, Blassingame's study
Here we are comparing Blassingame's study and earlier works
Great. KEEP D

Answer choice E: Unlike the earlier works on slavery, Blassingame in his
Here we are comparing Blassingame and earlier works
Nonsense: ELIMINATE E

Answer: D

Correct idiomatic Usage of Unlike is - Unlike A , B

Here A = earlier works on slavery , and B = Blassingame's...

Hence options (A) , (B) and (E) can be rejected...

We are left with Options (C) and (D).

(D) looks crisp and short hence I will choose (D) over (C)...
