(B) has increased by 25 percent, however much their salaries lag
(C) have increased 25 percent; female executives' salaries, however, still have lagged

What is wrong with option B?
I'm no expert, just trying to work on my skills. If I've made any mistakes please bear with me.

Here, the subject is THE NUMBER. We do not have any antecedent for "THEIR"

What is the official answer? is it D?
As per the original sentence there are 2 independent clause perfectly joined by a semicolon.
in B their needs a plural antecedent which is not there.

In option B

however is a conjunctive adverb.

The rule one must follow regarding conjunctive adverb is

When a conjunctive adverb is used to connect two independent clauses, it must be preceded by a semicolon and followed by a comma.

Hence option B is a run-on sentence
