There is some overlap between the GMAT and GRE, but the tests are fairly different because each has it's own tricks. A short overview is that the GRE requires a much larger vocabulary, the GMAT tests grammar, and the math section on the GMAT is a bit tougher. I've written a much more in depth article about this on my website called GMAT vs GRE.
