Let’s try manipulating the expression about which we are being asked.

part A.

4^(x–1)2 = 4^(2x– 2)

Part B

If we further simplify we get the expression 4^2x/4^2
To solve this expression, all we need is to find the value of 4^2x

from manhattan GMAT... I do not understand how to simplify part a to reach part b. Thank you for any help

Just remember the following two exponent rules, they are very important:

1. a^(m+n) = a^m*a^n

Example: 2^(2+3) = 2^2*2^3

2. a^(m-n) = a^m/a^n

2^(3-2) = 2^3/2^2
