Should I consider Giving GMAT if I'm not working ?

Hello ,I'm a 29 year old female currently in USA . I have over 7+ years of experience India and USA combined in IT/Services industry as a Software engineer and in a BA role.However, I took a break from work in Feb 2013, as I gave birth to my twins,their health was poor and so was mine as I had a very troubling and premature delivery. Right now everything seems to be under control and I would like to resume work.That being said,I always wanted to pursue MBA and thought of utilized this break from work as an platform for studying GMAT and applying for MBA.Please advice if I should consider sitting for GMAT and applying to B-schools under current scenario as an option?
I'm confused because I'm not sure whether B-schools would accept applications from a home-maker like me with a gap from active office work for more than a year.This underlying fear-- that I would be rejected as I'm not working makes me always second guess my wish of pursuing an MBA.Should I go ahead and start studying for GMAT?or should I just start looking for work in my field and then think about GMAT in a couple of years?
Please help me sort out this dilemma,any response/suggestions would be very much appreciated Thank you so much.

Hi rise2hbs,

You ask a good question, but I think that you should ask it to some Admissions Experts. Try reposting this in the Admissions Forum (on this site) and you should receive some responses. Since you already have 7+ years of work experience, my first thought is that taking some recent time off to have children would not necessarily work against you.

To properly prepare for the GMAT and apply to Business Schools takes a lot of time and effort though, so you have to plan out your schedule to accommodate everything (including your family). It might be that you just focus on the GMAT until it's done and not focus too much on making any Admissions School application deadlines just yet. Once you learn a bit more about what it's going to take to hit your score goal, you'll be better able to put together an initial plan. As a suggestion, most Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) on their GMAT prep, so you might factor that into your plan.

If you have the time to study for the take the GMAT now and business school is something you are seriously considering, why not take the GMAT now? After all, your score will be valid for five years should you decide to apply to business school.

As for your question about when to apply, that's up to you. Schools will want to see an explanation for any gaps between jobs, and having children is certainly not an uncommon reason for a gap!

Business Schools would be lucky to have you. They need some people with a little bit of life experience! You must know this, but there are lots of IT people who apply to the MBA, and India is one of the top countries of origin. In other words, you would need a good GMAT score even without a gap in employment. Although fewer of those IT professionals are female, so that is good.

I cannot imagine that a year off because of having twins could possibly count against you. And any school that holds that against you is a school that you do not want to attend. It is like a good test, if they don't want you because of a reason like this, well then you certainly do not want them.

Please read the following article called "Imagine your way to success on the GMAT." In my mind the biggest hurdle has always been the question of what YOU want. Life is short and business school is just one option of many; but if this is your dream then do not hesitate to go for it!
