Short-Term Goal

by DCJ » Sun Nov 06, 2011 7:07 am
If my short term post MBA goal is consulting, is that something to articulate in my essay? I'm concerned because Adcom's might perceive my goal as indecisive and also not differentiating since MBA programs tend to largely feed consulting firms. The long term goal is corporate strategy at a media company and I think consulting would give me the broad experience within media and other industries needed for my long term goal.

Hi DCJ--

Since consulting is a common goal, you don't need to "explain" it per se, but it's super important to expand upon it, from a personal perspective as to why you are pursuing this path. Discussing your interest in consulting, showing the adcom how you have the right background to pursue it, and most especially, describing, as you did above, how consulting is the best next step to lead you to the media/strategy role you have identified in the long term, will all go far in helping you differentiate yourself among all the other candidates.

These are ways you can show that you NEED the MBA, rather than justing wanting one.

We've been going over these important strategies for developing the goals at the 30 Days of Essays site this week (see https://30days.hoop.la/displaycontent/co ... 7841947503 in particular on the "need" for an MBA) -- you (and everyone else!) are invited to join in!

I agree.

Also if you are going into Media in the long term, this can likely be suggested by some sort of specialization in the short term. Like for example, you could state your intention to work for a media consulting firm, or specialize in media consulting in a larger firm. The idea is to show some real link, so that it's more than "I'll just get that good consulting job, and then I'll see"
