"on the condition that" Subjunctive form, So the next verb must be in its base form. This rule leaves A as only correct option.

I always tend to miss the subjunctive mood fundas while answering questions.

In this case too, I was confused between B and C but as per your explanation A turns out to be the answer.

Can you share some basics of Subjunctive mood here?

It is still flattering and surprising to find reference to anyone reading things I've written. The subjunctive in English is so tricky because it's on its way out of use. Unfortunately, it won't be gone by the time any of you take the GMAT.

This is an example of Bossy verb which appears in Command Subjunctive. The format is:
Bossy verb + That + subject + Command Subjunctive

"on the condition that they not be named in the story" - is correct form of Command Subjunctive.

This form is known as the Bare form on the verb: the infinitive without to

That'd be rather sad, if its on the way out. I'm such a fan of the subjunctive. It provides such flair to the language!

first of all this is a subjunctive mood case and every one should know its rules
e.g i request garry that he be here at 9 am
when u order/request/demand/condition something u use subjunctive mood. such as: Be ready. u dont use "should, are, is, will"

now just break this sentecne:
Several senior officials spoke to the press on condition (its a conditional sentecne)
that (what?)
they (who? several senior officials...we need main subject not the object, thus using "they" which stands for officials.
not be named in the story. (be is used and subjunctive mood does not require any is, are, should, will)


(A) that they not be named (right)
(B) that their names will not be used (using their names will..wrong)
(C) that their names are not used(their names are...wrong)
(D) of not being named (being...totally wrong)
(E) they will not be named (will...wrong)

Jumping here to throw more light

to with above kind of sentences rule is below : (Command Rule)

(command or demand or request or order or rule OR recommend or authorize or important or propose require to/that ) +"That"---->verb can be used only 1st form OR 'be'+3rd form.
