Setting up a corporation requires more paperwork and legal provision than to establish either a proprietorship or a partnership.

a.than to establish either a proprietorship or a partnership.

b.than what it requires to establish either a proprietorship or a partnership.

c.than to either establish a proprietorship or a partnership.

d.than establishing either a proprietorship or a partnership.

e.than establishing proprietorships and partnerships.

ans is d. Can some one tell me wats the difference between option d and e or rather how to eliminate e???

it has to be either or

and implies that it can set up both together

Only one answer to your Q ----- Corporation = SINGULAR, hence we can compare it to singular nouns only.

"proprietorships" and "partnerships", in option E, are plural nouns and hence can't be compared to "Corporation" (singular).....

only D uses singular and maintains parallelism, choose D

Can any one please tell me how is A eliminated . The only difference that I see In A and D is between the infinitive and the -Ing form of the verb .

A says : to establish either X or Y .

D says : establishing either X or Y .

As you can see both A and D maintains parallelism but why is D correct and not A ?

Even we need to use subjunctive here b'cos of word REQUIRE .

Only option A fits the bill.

The Idiom used here is : More X than Y, X and Y need to be ||el

X- paperwork and legal provision
Y - to establish ( an infinitive, not parallel )

Only a gerund - 'xxING' can act as a noun to maintain the ||ism.Hence, establishing is the only option. IMO:D

I dont get it . Can you tell me what is the rule .

As far as I know "establishing proprietorships and partnerships" is a simple GERUND phrase .

So is the complete phrase that we are considering for parallelism ?

IMO complete phrase after THAN should be considered for ||ism.

Setting up a corporation requires more paperwork and legal provision than to establish either a proprietorship or a partnership.

a.than to establish either a proprietorship or a partnership.

b.than what it requires to establish either a proprietorship or a partnership.

c.than to either establish a proprietorship or a partnership.

d.than establishing either a proprietorship or a partnership.

e.than establishing proprietorships and partnerships.

If Parallelism is a issue then Setting .... is balanced with establishing. ''and'changes the meaning in e.

In the non-underlined portion of the sentence we have "setting up a corporation"; only "establishing" is parallel to "setting".

Regarding D vs E, we have "corporation" in the non-underlined part, so we also need singular nouns in the second part of the comparison. Accordingly, "proprietorships" and "partnerships" are not parallel.

"and" also changes the meaning of the sentence, since the original sentence used "or", indicating that they are alternative, not joint, institutions.

Why is B wrong? I think both D and E should be eliminated, since "more paperwork and legal provision than" can not be compared with "establishing whatever" but "what is requires to establish whatever", no?
