IMO E

"this" should refer singular noun phenomenon and author.........speculates is correct.

It can't be E. Mechanisms is plural so you need 'are' not 'is'. I choose C

Yes correct. I overlooked the plural subject.

"Underlying this phenomenon" is just a phrase and we need plural verb

sub: the mechanisms(plural)
verb: are(plural)
so eliminate: B,D and E

phenomenon ....is singular form
and phenomena is plural form

phenonmenons is not a word
so eliminate A

hence C is the ans
