Sentence Correction Questions - 1 (2Nos)

1. Why painting the face and perfuming the body should have persisted throughout recorded history has been the subject of a substantial amount of anthropological and psychological speculation.
(A) Why painting the face and perfuming the body should have persisted
(B) How painting the face and perfuming the body could be persistent
(C) That painting the face and perfuming the body are persisting
(D) Painting the face and perfuming the body persisting
(E) The persisting of face painting and body perfuming

the answer is a.. y? i thought the answer could be either b or e.. but tilted towards b.. anyway y is a correct?

The doctrinal dispute resulted in the dismissal of the president of the seminary, who was charged with teaching false doctrine and with administrative misconduct.
(A) charged with teaching false doctrine and with administrative misconduct
(B) charged with teaching false doctrine and administrative misconduct
(C) being charged that he taught false doctrine and administrative misconduct
(D) charged with both false doctrine teaching and administrative misconduct
(E) teaching false doctrine and administrative misconduct as charged

my answer was D.. but the correct answer is a.. why? pls explain.. c i thought better because it uses correct idiom 'both... and'..

1.
C D n E - use "persisting" (present continuous form). here we r talking abt n event that happened in the past. hence incorrect.

B - persistent - present tense. hence incorrect.

hence IMO A.

2.
B - gives n impression that the president was teaching "administrative misconduct". hence incorrect.
C - usage of being is incorrect.
D - both is redundant.
E - awkward construction.

hence IMO A.

Not convincing.

Face painting started in the past and it still persistent. Ideal usage should be, Present Perfect Tense. Although we don't have that. usage of Past is also incorrect.

And "both" is always accompanied by "and".

Comments--

When you think you can or you cannot, you are generally correct.

3 reasons I chose A over D,

1) You mentioned the answer in your orignal post itself. Please avoid doing so, it kills the healthy debate/discussion otherwise possible

2) 'Teaching false doctrine' seems better than 'False doctrine teaching'... atleast to me the former make more sense.

3) There are two distinct charges namely 'Teaching false doctrine' and 'administrative misconduct'..use of 'with' before each make the distiction clearer and also puts the emphasis on these individual items

Well dats only my viewpoint, can always be wrong. Others please contribute

Yo, from now on i wouldn't post answers:)

however, ur 2nd point seems ok to me..

but as far as the 3rd point goes: i don't see the difference between using (A) charged with teaching false doctrine and with administrative misconduct and
(D) charged with both false doctrine teaching and administrative misconduct

moreover D has an idiom 'both..and' that attracted me towards it:P

(D) charged with both false doctrine teaching and administrative misconduct

what's the reason for eliminating D? Is it only because of using "teaching" as a noun? or is there any other reason as well?
