Sentence correction - GMAT PREP - need help .

ok first off..gmat hates the word being because it is a form of passive voice and try to avoid it whenever possible. remember the process of elimination is in three steps. 1. grammar 2. meaning 3. style

e. contains the word being so stay away
a. hold
b. galileo had not.....eliminate not grammatical
c.very very wordy eliminate
d. doesnt contain BUT which is needed for the parallelism or contrast.

correct me if I am wrong folks..hope that helps

"Being" is indeed a great word to avoid in SC.

Another reason to eliminate (e) is that it uses 2 connectors ("even though" and "but") to join independent clauses. The rule is that we need 1 and only 1 such connector.

If you examine the second clause in the sentence, you see that D has no subject.

The first clause in the sentence is "Galilieo did not invent the telescope".

The second clause in the sentence is "quickly built his own device...".

"built" is the main predicate (i.e. verb) in the second clause. By omitting "he", (D) leaves that clause without a subject.
