the underlining has been correctly modified

option 1, 2 - has been - no need to use perfect tense here...completion of one event doesn't affect the other

c- 20th century is over..kindly move on

d - were.....although one useful invention is worth many discoveries....grammar is impartially brutal

e - was....correctly used..thank you very much

2)Scientists are currently trying to determine the extent to which tectonic plates have been shifted from their previous positions by earthquakes and other similar phenomena.
a)to which tectonic plates have been shifted
b)to which tectonic plates have shifted
c)of the shift of tectonic plates
d)of tectonic plates shifting

excellent example of not shutting passive options blindly

a - "have been..........by earthquakes"........what more can i say??
b - passive voice is badly needed
c - extent of the shift.....many errors easiest one to spot - using 2 "of" is awkward
d - for me this option is bad english
e - wrong idiom (extent that)...but correctly uses passive voice

A for me

3)It was anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that led to the discovery of Neptune.
a)It was anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that
b)It was the orbit of Uranus showing anomalies that
c)They were anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that
d)The orbit of Uranus being anomalous was what

Again underlining problem in the original sentence

b - wrong subject....meaning changed
c - they were......who were???
d - an option with "being" always brings a smile
e - "was what led to" sounds awkward to me

the fight is between A and E.....A begins with a pronoun "it" which makes me unsure of A.....but E sounds more awkward than A with "was what"....hence E loses

I am assuming the fight is between A and B for most of us.

Identifying the subject is crucial. Here, the subject is earthquakes, which appears later in the sentence along with an indicator "by".... hence "have been" is logically and grammatically coherent. (for e.g. the letter has been written by Rita)

Passive voice is generally less favored in GMAT but the "by earthquakes" part appears in the non-underlined segment mandating a passive usage

People tend to ignore passive usage as soon as it appears and the 1st half of the sentence - "Scientists are currently trying to determine the extent to which tectonic plates have shifted from their previous positions" makes passive usage unnecessary......but as soon as the "by earthquakes" part appears silently, "been" becomes compulsory. Most of us mark B.

In general, a lot of correct answers immediately follow a wrong option hence even the placement of the right answer is strategic here. Overall an excellent question and set of options.

This is a very common GMAT example, guess from Kaplan 800... reading the entire sentence is vital.
