The very first line is a modifier proceeding a comma -> A leading figure in the Scottish enlightenment,
Who can be a leading figure? Adam Smith or his books? Definitely Adam Smith! This helps you in eliminating A,B and C.

D and E both uses a noun after the comma and thus making use of the right modifier-noun relationship.
Then comes the idiom part as user 'mikalyllau' pointed out. The correct idiom is: 'X is to what Y is to'. This help you to eliminate D and go for E.

Thanks.
