In a school of 1000 students, 60% are males and rest are females, out of male students, 30% have opted for maths. if 40% of the overall students have opted for maths, what is the ratio of males to females who have not opted for maths.

A. 7:2
B. 7:3
c. 3:2
d. 1:1
e. 9:14

Hi,
Males = 60%(1000) = 600
Females = 400
Males opted for Maths = 30%(600) = 180
Students opted for Maths = 40%(1000) = 400
So, females opted for maths is 400-180 = 220
Ratio of males to females who have not opted maths is (600-180) : (400-220) = 420 : 180 = 7:3

Hence, B

For such questions, the best approach is to make a table
Maths Non-Maths Total
Male 180 (420) 600
Female (220) (180) (400)
Total 400

The figures in the above table are those that we have calculated.
Hence, the ratio of males to females not opted for maths = 420/180 = 7/3

The table is not coming nicely when I preview, but I hope you get the idea.

Since the problem asks for a ratio, we can plug in 100 for the total number of students.
Use a group grid to organize the information:

Here is the grid with the following known values entered:
60% are males.
Out of the male students, 30% have opted for maths.
40% of the overall students have opted for maths.

The numbers in the grid have to add up horizontally and vertically.
Fill in the missing numbers:

Males who didn't opt for math : Females who didn't opt for math = 42:18 = 7:3.

The correct answer is B.
