SC- Which one is better one

by goelmohit2002 » Wed Jul 01, 2009 11:15 am
Hi All,

In the below two sentences, can someone please tell:

1. Do both mean the same ?
2. Is there any difference in the meaning of the sentences....or both convey the same thing.
3. If both are same and convey the same thing...then which one is preferred in GMAT and why ?

=======================================
A. Americans are smart workers.
B. "The" Americans are smart workers.

Thanks
Mohit

"The" is definite article, used, esp. before a noun, with a specifying or particularizing effect.. in the above two sentences, I don't see much difference or rather any difference..

1. Americans are smart workers is a generic statement.. which means that all americans are smart workers..

2. "The" Americans are smart workers sounds exactly same to the first sentence.. I dont see a difference here.. You might use this sentence more in a place where you had a group of people, where in few were americans and so you wanted to specifically call out those few americans..

apart from that I can't think of anything else.

Thanks DD.

Can you please give an example where presence of "the" changes the meaning/have effect on the sentence...

Thanks DD. Just one related doubt.

In the below gmatprep question, the OA is C. In between A and C...there is a difference between "the"....can you please help me understand how does this "the" makes the equation in favour of C.

==============================================

The success of the program to eradicate smallpox has stimulated experts to pursue what they had not previously considered possible -- better control, if not eradication, of the other infections such as measles and yaws.

A. what they had not previously considered possible -- better control, if not eradication, of the other infections such as
B. what they had not previously considered a possibility -- better control, if not eradication, of such infections like
C. something they had not previously considered possible -- better control, if not eradication, of such infections as
D. something not considered a previous possibility -- better control and perhaps eradication, of other infections such as
E. the possibility of what they had not previously considered possible – better control and possibly eradication of infections like

the problem with the sentence is the usage of "what they had not" instead of a simple "something".. using "what" makes it very specific.. also the use of "the other infections" is too specific.. we just need to give example of such infections..
