According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.

(A) like that of earlier generations

(B) as that for earlier generations

(C) just as earlier generations did

(D) as have earlier generations

(E) as it was of earlier generations

Kindly let me know the reason why B is incorrect

here we are comparing the goal of two generations....so 2 nouns are compared and like shld be used in this case...IMO A is the ans

The answer is E.

In this situation you want to use 'as' since this is a true comparison of two things that are the same. You only want to use 'like' when it is a comparison of two things that are not exactly the same, but alike in some quality.

Once you've eliminated A, you're on the right track. B and D are missing a pronoun referring to the goal of owning and living in a house, and C has the dangling participle 'did'.

E has 'it' referring back to the goal of owning and living in a house, which is the answer and no dangling participles, therefore it's the best choice.
