1.Climatic shifts are so gradual as to be indistinguishable at first from ordinary fluctuations in the weather.
(A) so gradual as to be indistinguishable
(B) so gradual they can be indistinguishable
(C) so gradual that they are unable to be distinguished
(D) gradual enough not to be distinguishable
(E) gradual enough so that one cannot distinguish them

Is it A?

B - unidiomatic. "so ... they"

C - indistinguishable is preferred over "unable to distinguish"

D - No comparison either with "so ... as to be" or "so ... that"

E - Incorrect usage. "so <adjective> ... that ..."

A has the correct "so ... as to be ..." construction IMO.

so..that is to be generally used! Only C fits in well. But then to be distinguished isnt correct.

I'd go with D

What is the OA?

the original sentence expresses a degree to which the climatic shifts are gradual that one finds it difficult to distinguish them from ordinary fluctuatons

(A) so gradual as to be indistinguishable so X as to Y
(B) so gradual they can be indistinguishable
(C) so gradual that they are unable to be distinguished
(D) gradual enough not to be distinguishable unidomatic
(E) gradual enough so that one cannot distinguish them
I am not an Expert, please feel free to suggest if there is an error.

IMO A
Idiomatically only A and C are correct.
passive voice makes C wordy and awkward.
So, A is the best option.

The answer is A.

The Idiom is "so...[adjective]...as to [verb]"

The original sentence correctly uses this Idiom: "so GRADUAL as to BE..."

In C, "they are unable to be distinguished" is passive voice. Who or what is doing the distinguishing?
