It has to be (A).

(B) creates a sentence fragment after the semicolon: "a legend to his fans in South Africa was unaware that his music had influenced so many" is not a complete sentence.

(C) has some Style awkwardness -- "rumored THAT" is way less clear than "rumored TO" and "where he was" is wordy and unnecessary.

The semicolon in (D) isn't incorrect, but it separates into two independent clauses thoughts that really should be conjoined for clarity of meaning.

Another Meaning issue in (E). He wasn't working construction only "while" the rumor was occurring. He was working construction all along.
