Ok, the question wants to show a contrast, ie inspite of the decrease, as late as 1the 19th century the deaths continued.
Now taking the options one at a time,
(A) After the Colonial period's 50 percent mortality
rate, life expectancy improved for children, but ....... life expectancy for children improved would have been better + the contrast is somewhat dull coz of u but.
(B) Even though children's life expectancy, which
improved over the Colonial period's 50 percent
mortality rate, ........remove this part and the sentence wouldnt make any sense with the remaining portion...which is the culprit here, which starts a descriptive phrase describing the life expectany and the sentence structure changes coz of that
(C) Although life expectancy for children improved
after the Colonial period, during which the
mortality rate was 50 percent, .....correct, corrects mistake in A and B
rest two should be easy to eliminate
(D) While there was an improvement in life
expectancy for children after the 50 percent
mortality rate of the Colonial period, still
(E) Despite children's life expectancy improvement for life
from the Colonial period's 50 percent mortality rate.
