I wrote the GMAT a few days ago and received a verbal score much lower than on my practice tests. I saw about 4-5 questions on the verbal section that involved a dash. I am hoping that my verbal score was lower than normal because I am not familiar with the rules surrounding using a dash in a sentence.
Initially, I thought that if there was one dash another dash had to follow it, and from there the rules were the same as using parentheses in a sentence. However, I do see questions where only one dash is sufficient. I am hoping that someone can please explain the rules of using a dash in a sentence (is it the same as using a comma?).
