1st one: E, here is why:
A. That twenty-one ceramic dog figurines were discovered during the excavating : unidiomatic..that is redundant..negated
B. Twenty-one ceramic dog figurines discovered at the excavation: sat the excavation is unidiomatic...negated
C. Discovering twenty-one ceramic dog figurines at the excavating: excavating is unidiomatic...it should be excavation of..negated
D. Ceramic dog figurines, twenty-one of which were discovered during excavating..excavating is unidiomatic...which is redundant..negated
E The discovery of twenty-one ceramic dog figurines during the excavation..spot on..idiomatic, precise

2nd one: D, here is why:
A. have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economic..wrong comparison..negated
B. have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical..economical is wrong..negated
C. would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical..economical is wrong..negated
D. would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic..spot on..comparison okay..economic is okay
E. would have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economical..economical is wrong...unidomatic.

Jan08, I agree with your answers, but am a bit confused about your explanations of how you came by them. What is "unidiomatic" and how is it determined?

sorry abt that...

In the first question: "excavating of" is unidiomatic..."excavation of" should be good..thats how I negated A, C and D.
Also, I could easily negate B because "discovered at the excavation" is unidiomatic...it should be "during excavation"..

thats how I chose E.

Please tell me if that is correct assumption?

Absolutely correct.

On a side note, I would be careful with the terminology "idiomatic vs. unidiomatic". Unless you are actually doing a question testing your knowlege of idioms it can change quite easily into "listening for an answer", which is where the test taker reads the answer choices to him/herself and picks which one "sounds right". This question wasn't one testing knowledge of idioms, which is why I bring this up.

You just explained to me (quite well I might add) why you made the choices, but if you can't do that, then the GMAT has many booby traps waiting for you!

(BTW, this is just a general statement jan08, not aimed toward anyone in particular. I just want everyone excel at SC on the GMAT, and I think these discussions can be beneficial to everyone out there reading the posts.)

I am not sure how the second Q answer cannot be D.

economical - cheap

economic - related to the economy

Here we are talking about the social and economic aspect. Not social and economical

There needs to be a "they do now" for the comparison to be correct.

We are NOT talking about present, we are talking about possibility and "would have" is correct

Stuart/Stacey/Guru's?
