Let's take the first Question.

'different from' or 'differ from' is idiom. A & C ruled out. 'they' in E is ambiguous, not clear whether it's referring to pigments used in modern paints or older paints. In D, it looks like pigments are used in older paints on the account of being more lightfast and vibrant.

Actually, I was confused between B and D. But, 'being' is mostly wrong in GMAT that's why went for B.

One doubt in B: is 'modern ones' referring to modern paints or pigments? I think, modern paints but then pigments is the subject.

E is incorrect as Karmayogi said they'' is ambiguous.

One can't be sure whether they refers to pigments in Modern oils or pigments in Old oils.

Note: for the second question

Rather than is usually preferred over Instead Of

differ from is better than different from

on being is wordy

E is right

D is right

I don't think that E is right because we don't know what "they" refers to.

Modern Oils
@rohan
I have already mentioned in my initial post itself that I also feel that 'modern ones' is referring to modern paints. But, we structure such statements something like this: x differs from y in that x/y has so and so feature. while the structure of B is x differs from y in that z has so and so feature.

So my doubt is, is the structure of B correct?
