the answer is E.
in C, "sunspot cycles" is too close to "as seen in the rings visible..."
Also, "On Earth" in C motifies the entire phrase that follows. It should only modify "indications"

IMO the correct answer should be E.
In the non-underlined portion of the sentence, the pronoun "their" (.. .their trunks) should have trees as its antecedent. "their trunks" cannot refer to "sunspot cycles". The pronouns should be as close to the antecedents as possible. Hence it makes more sense to place - trees - as close to the pronoun "their" .. their trunks..
The only two options that do so are A and E. However in A the construct, "rate that trees grow" is little awkward.
Option E clearly conveys the intended meaning clearly.
