A and B can be ruled our for the use of 'at its 1833 founding' which suggests there were more than one founding.
E can be ruled out for the use of 'on the acceptance of'.
I picked C, but as it turns out OA is D. Now I am not sure.

Can somebody explain this. Thanks in advance.

i think the purpose of the sentence is to show that the college was a renegade in its action of deciding. and not specifically in 1833 or at its founding.

b and e had me thinking but ultimately they sounded awkward to me. a and c change the purpose of the sentence as i described above, so i ruled them out. finally d is the only answer that keeps the purpose of the sentence in check and i couldnt see any mistakes in it either. therefore i chose d.

Ooops.. I am sorry.. Let me explain.. the sentence that I have written on top.. i.e. "Oberlin college was a renegade institution because it decided to accept both men and women.." Choice D actually states this.. that is why this is our answer.. it also uses the correct usage.. "in deciding"...

ANSWER HERE:

A and B are wrong because the college has only one founding, whereas "at its 1833 founding" makes it look like it has multiple founding days.

C. is wrong because it was not founded for its decision, changes meaning.

E. by deciding...on the acceptance, they did not become rogue by "deciding on the aacceptance", here we are unsure if the college accepted or not.

D. Clears up the ambiguity in E.
