SC - not only.....but(Manhattan Flash Card Doubt)

Hi All,

In the Manhattan SC flash cards available at:

page#88....

the sentence given is
"Being a pacifist, I was not only upset she was being so militaristic, but, that she was torturing the captives."

Apart from being usage....Flash cards say the above is wrong....because of wrong idiom "not only....but "

The same is corrected as

"As a pacifist, I was upset not only that she was being so militaristic but also that she was torturing the captives."

But I guess "not only X....but Y"...is a correct idiom in GMAT...

Please correct me if I am wrong.

You're right

However the correct idiom is "not only...but also..."

This idiom is very commonly tested on the GMAT.

example

She is not only beautiful, but also smart.

You want to follow the idiom with two different descriptions.

I read the stacey and Ron's comments on this forum only....that not only ...but is a correct idiom...

Not sure why the same does not match with the Manhttan flash cards :-(

It misses 'that' after 'not only'. Note that 'that' is used after 'but'. So the items being compared are not structurally similar.

Hi Scooby,

No I am not mixing...

there following are correct idioms as per GMAT...

not X but [rather] Y
not only X but [also] Y

this is atleast what Ron/Stacey say....
