A daily average of 10,000 barrels of oil is yielded in Alaska's Prudhoe Bay, which is 900 times the daily average for the typical site and accounting for a significant percentage of the oil produced in the United States.


(A) A daily average of 10,000 barrels of oil is yielded in Alaska's Prudhoe Bay, which is 900 times the daily average for the typical site and accounting for a significant percentage of the oil produced in the United States

(B) A daily average of 10,000 barrels of oil, which has been yielded in Alaska's Prudhoe Bay, being 900 times the daily average for the typical site and accounting for a significant percentage of the oil produced in the United States

(C) With a daily average of 10,000 barrels of oil, Alaska's Prudhoe Bay yields 900 times the daily average for the typical site, a significant percentage of the oil produced in the United States

(D) Alaska's Prudhoe Bay has yielded a daily average of 10,000 barrels of oil, which is 900 times the daily average for the typical site, and for a significant percentage of the oil produced in the United States

IMO E

A--> Which refers to Alaska's Bay wheras it should refer to the quantity of oil yielded.
B--> worng tense "has been", awkward construction " a daily average being and accounting"
C--> Modifier issue.
D--> wrong tense "has yielded" ; and follows a phrase only whereas it should be followed by a clause.

E--> correct use of tense, correctly puts the the two parts in parallel in a relative clause.

I eliminated E because in S, which refers to oil and means that oil is 900 times the daily average. I understand that from comparison used in non-underlined part of sentence, which should refer to daily average rather than oil. But is it allowed as I understand that which always refers to the immediate preceeding noun?

Hi,

This is E sentence

Alaska's Prudhoe Bay yields a daily average of 10,000 barrels of oil, which is 900 times the daily average for the typical site and accounts for a significant percentage of the oil produced in the United States


Alaska's Prudhoe Bay yields a daily average of 10,000 barrels of oil, which .....
here "of 10,000....oil" is a prepositional phrase which describes "a daily average"
To identify prep. phrase we should always ask " preposition followed by what". ie. "of what".

So, which modifies not the "oil" but "a daily average of 10000 barrels of oil" together. Also, look out for its comparison after "which"
