In JAN ,an oil barge ran aground in San Juan,leaking oil in to the ocean ,polluting the beaches.


My answer was the above . The correct answer said

,and it leaked oil into the ocean ,polluting...


PLease explain why ???

PLEASE PLEASE - post more clearly...

The reason is that leaked is supposed to be in parallel with the verb ran. 'polluting ...' is a participial phrase, which is actually an adjective. As an adjective it is not all related to the verb structure.
