Ignoring the admonitions of his staff, the chief financial officer accepted the advice of the consulting company because he believed that the standardized accounting procedures would prove not only inexpensive but reliable indicators of economic performance.
(A) he believed that the standardized accounting procedures would prove not only inexpensive but
(B) the standardized accounting procedures will prove both inexpensive and also
(C) he believed the standardized accounting procedures would prove themselves to be both inexpensive and
(D) he believed that the standardized accounting procedures would prove to be both inexpensive and
(E) standardized accounting procedures will prove his belief that they are both inexpensive and
Confused between A and C

I think "A" is unidiomatic (not only xxx but also yyy), I am little confused between "c" and "d" but I guess ; believe followed by that as incorrect so will go for "C". As "C" has correct idiomatic expression believe xxx to be xxx

OA is C but according to GMAT "not only....but" is also correct idiom. I have seen sentence like that.
So I am confused between A and C

Can you please recall the place here you saw not only... but as correct idiom.

IMO correct idioms are
not.... but
not only.... but also

C is correct because proved needs themselves.

@gmat009, pls provide the source of this question. The answer should be D. all other are incorrect.

A is incorrect because the idiom is "not only...but also" I searched and cannot even find one place where we read that "not only...but" is correct.

B removes "he believed that". in addition to this, it also uses 'will' for something that cannot be predicted with full confidence. we need to use 'would' here.

@stop@800, C is incorrect, because it uses 'themselves'. we just dont need it here! also it omits the use of 'that' after believes...this is important.

D correctly uses "believed that"....and "would"

E..."will prove his belief that.." aah...too too wordy!

but Believed X to be Y seems correct
instead of Believed that X to be Y

Can someone clear my doubts...?

Here is an example from GMATPrep where it uses idiom "not only .....but"

By pressing a tiny amount of nitrogen between two diamonds to a pressure of 25 million pounds per square inch, scientists not only were able to transform the gas into a solid, but they also created a semiconductor similar to silicon.

I was not aware of this rule, I always considered not only... but also as correct idiom.
and I generally give more priority to idioms than to parallelism.

Thanx guys for such a gr8 discussion but i think OA shld be D and themseleves is the mistake in C.
Can any1 pls explain more precisely where to you not only ....but also and where to use not only.....but............if both are given then i thnk we shld go for not only........but also.

the use of "... would prove .. reliable indicators of economic performance" doesnt make sence .. D corrects it by saying " would prove to be reliable ..."

and wonder has already pointed out a link.. for not only.. but also.. please check that..
