A - usage of "having" is incorrect.
B - changes the meaning of the sentence.the intended meaning is that one of the informants eventually claimed that he/she was not aware of the crime. B says that he/she actually professed (self-acknowledged) to the crime although ignorantly.hence incorrect.
C - ................ since fear that ............. - awkward construction.
E - same as C.

hence IMO D.

OA is D, bu I thought that "since" can be used as "because" and chose the wrong answer C!

I chose the C for the same reason but in the explanation, Kaplan says that we need a preposition like FOR not a conjunction like SINCE.

Can anybody shed some light on this ?

IMO,If "since" is used as a conjunction we dont require a "comma" in front of it..

Also, a "preposition" is always placed before a noun or a pronoun(here "fear" to show relation with rest of the the sentence..thus "for" is used..

Eg:

We packed a lunch, ________for____ we knew we would soon be hungry
