How would you explain the answer to this question?

Los Angeles has a higher number of family dwellings per capita than any large city.

(a) a higher number of family dwellings per capita than any large city
(b) higher numbers of family dwellings per capita than any other large city
(c) a higher number of family dwellings per capita than does any other large city
(d) higher numbers of family dwellings per capita than do other large cities
(e) a high per capita number of family dwellings, more than does any other large city

Answer C

1) higher number

A is wrong on several counts. The most obvious is saying Los Angeles has more dwellings than "any large city". That construction would eliminate LA from the set of large cities, which is incorrect. To illustrate, you can say Mickey Mouse is funnier than "any other" cartoon character because he is a cartoon character. You cannot say Mickey Mouse is funnier than "any" cartoon character because he would then have to be funnier than himself: a logical impossibility.

Without the verb "to do", the sentence says that LA has more dwellings than cities. That eliminates B
D is wrong because LA has a "number", not "numbers" of dwellings.
E is out because "per capita" is placed to modify "number", not "family dwellings".

Go with C
