None of the options appears correct to me.

I would have chosen C if it were "Just as they never ..... ".

IMO (A), because LIKE is use to compare nouns whereas AS is use to compare actions. In the current questions, the author compares FORGAVE with ABSOLVED.

The Syrians never forgave the Crusaders.
(at the same time)
The Syrians never absolvd the French.
a. "even as" signifies "at the same time". that is our intended meaning here
b. "while" would act like "although", that is, if some opposite act was to be shown (eg "while" syrians forgave the crusaders, syrians ever absolvd the French.) hence, this will be incorrect here.
c. just like is redundant. only 'like' should do wherever needed. but ofcourse as already pointed out, 'like' is only used to compare nouns.
d. awkward...wordy...modifier problem too
e. 'in spite of' is always wordy... and changes intended meaning

Of all the choices 'C' looked relatively correct to me.
Obviously the 'Just like' construction looked troublesome.
